Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Background on Conviction
