Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
